(Alternate Angle) Bonita Vista High School Club Blue at Sweetwater Union High School District Band Pageant 2001 Band Director: Rick Lorenzen Colorguard Advisor: Amy Mack Musical Selections from the Stephen Sondheim Musical "Sunday in the Park with George" The following was written by Rick Lorenzen, outlining the show's eccentricities: Program Notes for "Sunday in the Park with George" (for those who don't get it...) Based loosely on the life of French impressionist painter, George Seurat. Even though a number of Seurat's paintings are featured in the play, the large "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" becomes a central element. In the play, the characters in the painting sing "It's Hot Up Here" (Stage whisper) -- that's because they're standing in the hot sun -- watching children play -- by the water. We say, "there are worse things than staring at the water on a Sunday." Seurat employed what came to be known as the pointalistic technique -- using primary colors placed side by side that are merged by the eye into other hues. Kind of an elementary lesson in color harmony -- you known, yellow and red combined make... The principal female character in the play is "Dot." Get it -- the dots all over the field in forms and silks. Uh -- primary colors. Dots in primary colors on solid backgrounds. Primary colors, yeah, primary colors -- got it yet Rain Man?
